What has changed since scheme design?
- we’re using 4 modules – without the pool, to try and maximise what we get for our cash
- entrance is now from the lowest part of the site – in a single run, with a wheelchair lift-like contraption for carrying the groceries up (and the odd plywood panel)
- a rooflight runs all the way along the rear – it’ll seal off in cold weather
- the air handling system is simpler – we don’t bother integrating the ducting into the structure – instead, we’ll expand the idea of hollow fabric “socks” to deliver conditioned air (the fabric air-delivery tube will drop from the ceiling space over the entrance, and then turn through 90 degrees to run along the underside of the upper walkway, throwing air to wherever its needed through windsock-shaped air “registers”.) Kind of like the stuff they sell.
- we’re not bothering with opening walls along the view wall (Wellington is not Sydney), instead opting for a solid glass ribbon (with the odd opening section to allow access to the external shelf for cleaning)
- the northern “garden” has taken on new significance (its the some-what unresolved/blank-looking part in the image above). Whilst coping with the 45° slope and shadow-constraint envelope, this region will need to resolve the following: — acts as an external entry vestibule — acts as the primary axial wind-brace for the entire structure — acts as a wind-shield from the southerly (we plan on allowing the upper end-wall of the house to open up) — acts as sun-control for the living space — combines with the staircase/wintergarden as the primary ourdoor living space — allows ramp access from the top of the hoist into the main space — tames a few geometrys lurking in the scheme — somehow resolves itself as the part of the design where the structure dematerialises into nature (ouch).
- the geometry of the main structure has straightened out simplified
- junctions are alot more rationalised
- it’ll be cheaper/easier to put together
Other than that, all the standardised parts are detailed – I’ll be posting the details when I’ve nailed this entrance issue…
